Did you know that the ancient and exotic cycads, while stunning, can pose a serious threat to our canine companions? These popular ornamental plants are not just a feast for the eyes but, unfortunately, a danger lurking in plain sight for curious dogs.

Cycads, commonly known as Sago Palms, are small plants with many unique features. Cycads have existed for over 200 million years – even before the dinosaurs roamed the earth. The most common signs in dogs ingesting cycad plants are gastrointestinal, hepatic, and neurologic signs, causing vomiting (with or without blood), depression, diarrhoea (with or without blood), and anorexia. All parts of the plant are toxic, but the seeds contain higher amounts of cycasin (a carcinogenic and neurotoxic glucoside) than the others. Despite being highly toxic, the seeds and leaves are highly palatable, so dogs often choose to eat them if available.

Take your time. Protect your beloved pets by educating yourself on the hazards of cycads and other potentially toxic plants.
